Giving guide

Zakat guide for beginners

Zakat is an obligation for Muslims whose wealth meets certain conditions. This page covers the vocabulary and the decision points. It is not a calculator, and it is not a ruling on your finances.

Zakat is not the same thing as charity in general. Sadaqah is the voluntary kind.

The terms you will hear are nisab, hawl, and 2.5 percent.

Different assets get treated differently, so a personal case needs reviewing.

Quran 9:60 names eight categories of people who can receive zakat.

What to focus on now

  • Learn the basic terms: zakat, sadaqah, nisab, hawl, and who can receive it.
  • Notice whether your savings or assets might sit above the threshold.
  • If you think zakat applies to you, ask someone qualified.
  • Give through organizations that explain their zakat policy in plain terms.

What can wait

  • A calculator inside this app.
  • Detailed sums for a business, a pension, debts, crypto, inheritance, or investments.
  • Treating one calculator online as the final word.
  • Arguing edge cases before you have the basics.

What zakat is

Zakat is obligatory giving once a Muslim meets the conditions for it. It purifies wealth and goes to people who qualify to receive it. Sadaqah is different: voluntary charity, any amount, any time.

Who usually pays

At a beginner level, zakat may apply if you own zakatable wealth above the nisab threshold for a lunar year. The details get complicated quickly, so do not panic if you cannot tell. Ask a qualified scholar or a zakat institution you trust.

Nisab, hawl, and 2.5 percent

  • Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth at which zakat becomes relevant.
  • Hawl is a lunar year passing over wealth that qualifies, which is how many zakat cases are counted.
  • 2.5 percent is the rate people quote for the common categories, though not every asset works that way.
  • Gold and silver thresholds, and anything modern, need a current answer from someone qualified.

Assets that raise questions

Cash savings, gold, silver, business stock, investments, money owed to you, and retirement accounts each raise their own questions. This page is here to help you ask better ones, not to hand you a final figure.

The eight categories of recipients

Quran 9:60 names eight categories of people who may receive zakat. Applying those categories takes knowledge of local need, organization policy, and scholarly interpretation, so work through a trusted zakat organization or ask someone qualified.

Choosing where to give

  • Look for a clear zakat policy, or a scholar who reviews their decisions.
  • Check that they explain who qualifies to receive it and what they take in fees.
  • Ask your local masjid who they trust to distribute zakat.
  • Keep your own records. Do not store personal financial details in this app.

Useful scripts

Asking a scholar

I'm new and trying to work out whether zakat applies to me. I have some savings, some debts, and a few assets. What should I bring so you can look at my case properly?

Asking a charity

Do you publish a zakat policy, and can you explain how you decide which campaigns or recipients are zakat-eligible?

When you are not sure

I don't want to guess with zakat. I'll learn the basics first, then ask someone qualified before I work out my own number.

Ask someone qualified if

Your question involves illness, medication, pregnancy, menstruation, hardship, travel, visas, qurbani, missed fasts, fidyah, zakat calculations, debt, business assets, or family pressure. This guide is general education, not a ruling for your situation.
