A general request
I'm a new Muslim and I'm trying to work out the right next step. It's about [brief topic]. Who should I be asking?
Practical guide
You do not need to know the right door before you knock. This page helps you work out whether your question belongs with an imam, a teacher, a counselor, a masjid administrator, a rights office, or an emergency service.
Write down what happened, what you need to decide, where you live, any deadline you are working to, and what is at risk. Keep the private details short unless they change the answer.
A lot of new Muslims get buried because they ask for everything at once. Ask for the next sensible step, what can wait, and who should look at it if it falls outside what this person does.
If someone might hurt you, if you might hurt yourself, if you are being abused, if a child is unsafe, or if there is a medical emergency, contact emergency services or crisis support where you live before you wait on ordinary community advice.
That does not mean nobody can. Ask them to refer you: another masjid, a scholar, a counselor, a chaplain, a helpline, a public office, or another qualified professional.
I'm a new Muslim and I'm trying to work out the right next step. It's about [brief topic]. Who should I be asking?
This is sensitive and it may involve family, safety, or a personal ruling. Could I book a private time, or be referred to someone qualified?
I'm planning my first visit. Could you tell me which entrance to use, the prayer time, anything I should know about parking or accessibility, and whether there's a contact for new Muslims?
Just say you are new. Responsible teachers expect beginner questions and can usually give you the next step in a sentence.
Ask a qualified local scholar what applies to you, and whether the difference is a valid difference of opinion, a local practice, or a misunderstanding.
Use urgent help: emergency services, a crisis line, a shelter, a hospital, or someone you trust who can sit with you now.
This guide is general education. If the question touches safety, marriage, family pressure, your rights at work or school, mental health, money, or a personal religious ruling, speak with a qualified local imam, scholar, clinician, legal professional, or safety service.
These sources back the general framing of this guide. They do not replace personal advice from someone qualified and local to you.
