Practical guide

How to ask for help

You do not need to know the right door before you knock. This page helps you work out whether your question belongs with an imam, a teacher, a counselor, a masjid administrator, a rights office, or an emergency service.

Start here

  • Different questions need different people: religious, clinical, legal, safety, administrative, or financial.
  • A short written summary makes it much easier for someone to answer responsibly.
  • Sensitive things need a private conversation with someone qualified, not a quick answer in a hallway.
  • Immediate danger, thoughts of self-harm, abuse, or a medical emergency go to emergency or crisis services first.

Who to ask

  • Ask an imam or a scholar about worship, halal and haram, religious questions in the family, and what to put first.
  • Ask a teacher or mentor about what to study, Arabic terms you keep hearing, classes, and how to find your way around the community.
  • Ask a mental health professional about anxiety, depression, trauma, panic, grief, or the risk of a crisis.
  • Ask a masjid administrator about prayer times, which entrance to use, classes, parking, accessibility, and who to contact.
  • Ask a rights office or a legal professional about work, school, housing, documents, and legal obligations.

What to include

Write down what happened, what you need to decide, where you live, any deadline you are working to, and what is at risk. Keep the private details short unless they change the answer.

Ask for the next step, not the whole map

A lot of new Muslims get buried because they ask for everything at once. Ask for the next sensible step, what can wait, and who should look at it if it falls outside what this person does.

When to escalate

If someone might hurt you, if you might hurt yourself, if you are being abused, if a child is unsafe, or if there is a medical emergency, contact emergency services or crisis support where you live before you wait on ordinary community advice.

If the first person cannot help

That does not mean nobody can. Ask them to refer you: another masjid, a scholar, a counselor, a chaplain, a helpline, a public office, or another qualified professional.

Things you can say

A general request

I'm a new Muslim and I'm trying to work out the right next step. It's about [brief topic]. Who should I be asking?

Asking for a private appointment

This is sensitive and it may involve family, safety, or a personal ruling. Could I book a private time, or be referred to someone qualified?

A question for the office

I'm planning my first visit. Could you tell me which entrance to use, the prayer time, anything I should know about parking or accessibility, and whether there's a contact for new Muslims?

Common situations

Just say you are new. Responsible teachers expect beginner questions and can usually give you the next step in a sentence.

Ask a qualified local scholar what applies to you, and whether the difference is a valid difference of opinion, a local practice, or a misunderstanding.

Use urgent help: emergency services, a crisis line, a shelter, a hospital, or someone you trust who can sit with you now.

When to ask someone qualified

This guide is general education. If the question touches safety, marriage, family pressure, your rights at work or school, mental health, money, or a personal religious ruling, speak with a qualified local imam, scholar, clinician, legal professional, or safety service.
