Practical guide

Guide for mentors of new Muslims

A mentor does not have to answer everything. The best early support is steady, private, and practical, and it hands the sensitive questions to people who are qualified for them.

Start here

  • Start with a welcome, the basics of prayer, one connection in the community, and a clear sense of what can wait.
  • Do not turn someone's conversion into public content without clear permission.
  • Do not bury them in advanced debates, culture wars, or your own preferences.
  • Send marriage, safety, trauma, clinical distress, legal, financial, and detailed fiqh questions to qualified people.

The first meeting

Welcome them, ask what they need today, and keep the conversation calm. What they need might be help with prayer, a tour of the masjid, a class they can trust, support with family, or just one safe person to ask basic questions.

  • Ask before you hand over a long list of tasks.
  • Give one or two next steps, not twenty.
  • Tell them how to reach you and how quickly you actually reply.
  • Keep it private unless they clearly want public support.

What to leave out

In a first meeting, skip the sect debates, the online controversy of the week, marriage pressure, politics, comments about their culture, and long lists of optional practices.

Boundaries when you follow up

Be reliable without becoming controlling. Do not demand constant updates, keep tabs on their private life, or set yourself up as their only source of guidance.

Where to refer

  • A scholar or imam for personal rulings, marriage, divorce, the details of worship, and religious questions about family.
  • A clinician or crisis line for trauma, panic, depression, thoughts of self-harm, addiction, or distress that will not lift.
  • A safety service for abuse, threats, stalking, the risk of losing housing, or someone holding their documents.
  • A legal or rights professional for work, school, housing, custody, immigration, and anything involving legal or financial paperwork.
  • A masjid administrator for classes, parking, accessibility, prayer times, and the practical side of visiting.

Privacy and safety

A public Shahada, an announcement in the group chat, a photo, or a testimonial can be a lovely moment for the community and a dangerous one for the person. Ask first, every time, and take a no without making them feel guilty for it.

Things you can say

First welcome

Welcome, I'm really glad you're here. What would help you most this week: prayer basics, a class, a visit to the masjid, something with your family, or just someone to answer beginner questions?

Naming the limit of your help

I can help you with the basics and with finding your way around here, but this one needs a qualified imam, a counselor, or another professional. I can help you find the right person.

Slowing things down

You don't need to learn all of this today. Let's pick one next step and leave the rest for later.

Common situations

Do not improvise. Help them get private time with a qualified local imam, and with a counselor or lawyer if the situation calls for it.

Safety comes first. Help them reach emergency services, a crisis line, a shelter, or a professional rather than treating it as a normal religious question.

Ask the new Muslim privately whether they want that. If they say no, or hesitate at all, keep it private.

When to ask someone qualified

This guide is general education. If the question touches safety, marriage, family pressure, your rights at work or school, mental health, money, or a personal religious ruling, speak with a qualified local imam, scholar, clinician, legal professional, or safety service.
