Thinking about Islam?

If you are reading this before becoming Muslim, you are welcome here. You do not have to decide anything today.

The Quran says, "There shall be no compulsion in [acceptance of] the religion" (2:256, translation of meaning). It also tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he could not guide even the people he loved: "Allah guides whom He wills" (28:56). Belief is between you and Allah (শব্দকোষ). Nobody can push it into you, and nobody should try.

Most people take their time. In a 2025 Yaqeen Institute survey of 618 converts in the United States, 99% said studying Islam (শব্দকোষ) had shaped their decision. Reading, asking and thinking it over is the normal way in.

Muslims believe in one God, Allah, who has no partner, no son and no equal. He sent prophets to every people, including Abraham, Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them), and Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the last of them. The Quran is the book revealed to him. Every person will be raised after death and will answer for how they lived.

Daily life as a Muslim rests on five practices, called the five pillars: the Shahada (শব্দকোষ), prayer (salah), charity (zakat), fasting in Ramadan, and the pilgrimage (Hajj) for those who are able to go.

You do not need a stack of books. Start with these three, all listed in the resources below:

1. 1The Clear Quran by Dr. Mustafa Khattab. Read the short opening chapter, Surah al-Fatihah (1), and Surah al-Ikhlas (112), which describes Allah in four lines. Quran.com has the same translation free online.
2. 2WhyIslam. Short, plain introductions to what Muslims believe, written for people who are curious.
3. 3Yaqeen Institute. Articles and videos that answer faith questions with sources, for when you want to go deeper.

If a question keeps coming back, write it down. One clear question is easier to get answered than twenty vague ones.

Some groups in Canada post a free Quran to anyone who asks. Before you fill in a form, read what it asks for.

The Why Islam Canada order form asks for a full street address and does not accept PO boxes. Orders are sent by ICNA Canada and GainPeace.org. The Furqaan Project's site says that giving your contact details is consent to receive email, text messages, phone calls and mail from them.

If you are keeping your interest private for now, use an address and an email you are comfortable with, or read online at Quran.com, which needs no sign-up.

Talking to a person often helps more than reading alone. Some places to start:

• A masjid near you. Use the masjid finder, then phone or email the office and ask to speak with someone who works with new Muslims or people exploring Islam.
• Why Islam Canada, run by ICNA Canada, has a "Talk To A Rep" contact form on its website. It does not list a phone number.
• A Muslim friend you trust, who will answer your questions without rushing you.

A good teacher answers your questions, admits what they do not know and lets you set the pace. Be careful with anyone who pushes you to decide quickly, wants to film you, or tells you to cut off your family. The red flags guide explains what to watch for.

Becoming Muslim means sincerely believing and saying the Shahada: "I bear witness that there is no god except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah." That is all.

There is no fee and no baptism-like rite. You do not have to change your name, pass a test or learn Arabic first. You can say it with an imam at a masjid, with a few friends, or on your own. Witnesses matter for the community's records, such as a certificate for a marriage, but not for whether it counts between you and Allah.

Some people reach a point where they believe in Allah and in the Prophet Muhammad but have not said the Shahada yet. Scholars have discussed this for centuries, and they do not all give the same answer.

A SeekersGuidance answer by Salman Younas sets out three positions. Some scholars hold that saying the Shahada aloud is a condition for faith to be valid. Some hold that saying it is part of faith itself. Others hold that faith is in the heart, and that saying it is a condition only for how Muslims treat you in this world, for example in marriage and burial. He says all three positions are strong. Shaykh Abdul-Rahim Reasat, also writing for SeekersGuidance, follows the third view.

Because scholars differ, this page will not tell you that you are already Muslim. The advice is simple: if you believe, say the Shahada. It settles the question, and it lets the Muslim community know you are one of them. A local imam or a qualified teacher can talk it through with you.

If you are a teenager thinking about Islam, you can learn at your own pace. Talk to a trusted adult if you can, such as a parent, a school counsellor or a relative. Think about your safety at home before you tell anyone, and remember that phones and browsers keep a history other people can see.

Some people start looking into Islam because they want to marry a Muslim. That is a common starting point, and it is not a problem in itself. What matters is whether you come to believe. If you feel pushed by a partner or their family, slow down and talk to someone outside the relationship. The relationships guide, linked below, covers this.

3. 3Visit or phone one masjid and ask to talk with someone who works with people exploring Islam.
4. 4Take as long as you need. When you are ready, the Shahada step shows exactly what to say.

You do not need to know everything before you become Muslim. Learning comes after the Shahada, one step at a time.

Debate channels that attack other religions are a poor place to learn. Many people come away from them angrier, not wiser.

Nobody should rush you into a public Shahada, a recording or a marriage. You also do not have to tell your family before you decide. When and how you tell them is your choice, and the family and friends guide can help when the time comes.
